Florida Chamber of Commerce Reemployment Assistance Portal

In 2022, I partnered with the Florida Chamber of Commerce to reimagine its outdated reemployment assistance portal, Reconnect. The goal was to create a modern, user-centered experience that instilled confidence and provided emotional support during what can be a highly stressful time for users.

Some of the improvements implemented to the portal were multiple progress indicators, which guided the user through each step and also let them know where they were in the process of each section.

Reconnect Portal Design

A sleek interface design with friendly colors that reflected the spirit of the Sunshine State helped create a more enjoyable user experience. Forms could be switched from single- to multi-column layouts to provide users flexibility and comfort to keep the information organized and easy to follow. An collapsible right-side panel hosted information pertinent to the user journey, as well as provided support when questions might arise.

Redesigning the User Journey

In addition to redesigning the portal, I was responsible for revamping the benefits handbook—a critical companion to the Reconnect web portal that guides users through the process of claiming unemployment benefits. This included redesigning the Claimant Journey Map. The existing system was visually outdated and difficult to navigate. Our challenge was to simplify the user journey through a complete visual and structural overhaul. By improving usability and accessibility, we aimed to reduce the volume of support calls and deliver a more intuitive, empathetic experience for users filing and managing their benefits.

Taking some inspiration from Google’s Waymo driving application, I created a modernized and streamlined look and feel, focusing on simplicity and allowing important information not to get lost in the clutter of the former design. By reducing illustrations and providing visual cues, users were able to understand and absorb the process of the claims journey much faster. Next, we overhauled the color palette to rely on cool and relaxing tones that modernized the look and feel, and supported a calm, confident appeal that exuded the spirit of the Sunshine state.

Reemployment Assistance Handbook

Using principles of Civic Design, I transformed the handbook into a more dynamic, blog-like experience—scalable, easy to navigate, and user-friendly.

A key focus was helping users understand where they were in the process at any given moment by incorporating clear visual cues and intuitive navigation, ultimately making the journey more transparent and less overwhelming.
